Suffering from a stroke or other brain injury is a scary and strenuous time for everyone involved. Whether you are experiencing the effects first hand or taking care of a loved one, the road to recovery can be a long and hard one. Even if you don’t perceive any problems with your vision, defects may be present, and they can have an extensive negative impact on your daily life as well as your other rehabilitation efforts. Although spontaneous recovery is possible within the first three months, the vast majority of patients need specific therapeutic intervention.

What is Vision Restoration Therapy?

Vision Restoration Therapy is performed on a computer at home twice daily, six days a week for six months. During each session, the patient focuses on a central point displayed on the screen and responds every time they see light stimuli appear elsewhere on the screen. The therapy is monitored and updated monthly by NovaVision Clinical Staff as the therapy progresses and the patient’s vision improves.

VRT is designed to strengthen the synaptic function of residual cells that have survived following brain trauma such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, inflammation, or elective surgery for removal of brain tumors. By repeated activation through the course of the therapy, VRT is designed so that patients using the program strengthen their impaired visual functions, and thus regain useful vision.

VRT is provided as a part of a therapy suite alongside our NeuroEyeCoach compensation therapy. While VRT addresses the restoration of lost vision as a result of neurological damage, NeuroEyeCoach addresses the difficulties with eye movements and your ability to integrate visual information. These two therapies therefore complement each other and are provided in one therapy suite to maximize patient benefit. Our Vision Restoration Therapy is the only FDA cleared therapy for the restoration of lost vision due to neurological brain damage such as stroke or other brain injury, and NeuroEyeCoach is also FDA registered.

Talking To My Physician

VRT requires a prescription and you will also need a visual field test; so you will need to talk to your doctor to obtain these.

The relationship between Doctor and patient is a very personal one, and although every practitioner operates differently, there are certain things you can do to make yourself well prepared to discuss exploring Vision Restoration Therapy as a way to help address your visual field deficit.

Since not every physician is aware of the therapy and the potential benefits for you, we are happy to walk you through whether or not VRT is the right solution for you and also how to move forward pursuing this therapy with your doctor. NovaVision has a number of resources that can be printed or shared with your physician including our testimonialsclinical studies, and general information on VRT.

However, we understand that explaining a therapy that you are still unfamiliar with yourself can be challenging. If you would like assistance explaining the method and benefits of Vision Restoration Therapy to your physician, our staff is happy to reach out on your behalf. With your permission, we will contact the doctor and will explain the therapy suite in detail.

If on the other hand you would like us to help you to find a prescribing doctor in your area, take a look at our Physician Directory and remember, we are here to help in any capacity along the way.
